The title tag is one of the most important parts of any webpage when it comes to SEO. It is one of the main indicators that Google relies on to understand a webpage. It is also the first thing searchers read before deciding whether to click on your website or not.

Let’s get into it.

What is a title tag?

A title tag is an HTML code that indicates your page’s title. Here is how it looks: <title> What is SEO?</title>.

The title tag is not necessarily the same title you see on a webpage. These two could be different, because the headline you see on a webpage is the H1 tag.

It is usually best to have the same page title and meta title tag to avoid looking suspicious in the eyes of Google.

Why title tags are important?

There are 4 main reasons why title tags are crucial for SEO:

1. The title tag is a ranking factor.

Google’s John Mueller has confirmed that the title tag is an SEO factor, although not a big one. He has stated that it is not a big one, but it is very important. It would be reasonable to assume that Google considers title tags as one of the most accurate information about the page’s content.

At the very least, your title tag has to be descriptive and easily readable. Remember, you have two goals with your title tag: to accurately describe the page and to make people click on it.

2. They appear in search

The titles of every webpage in the search engine results pages are taken from their title tags. Yes, the content of the title tag is the first thing your potential visitors see and that influences their decision to click on your website.

3. They appear in browser tabs

3. They appear on social media

When someone shares your webpage on social media platforms, the snippet that shows what the page is about usually includes the featured image and the content of your page’s title tag.

How to write title tags?

Here is how to properly write title tags to optimize your webpage for SEO:

1. Determine your target keyword

After you conduct a keyword research, determine the main keyword that your page is going to target. If you are still unsure, Google a similar keyword and see what your competitors are targeting.
You should put this keyword at the beginning of the title tag. Having a number before it is also fine. For example, if you are targeting the keyword “best business books”, a good title tag for SEO would be “25 Best Business Books in 2023”.

2. Look at the competition

In general, if your title tag is very similar to those of competitors’, then it is fine, although you can go an extra mile to stand out.

3. Keep it short

The best title tag length is between 50 and 60 characters. Both Google and searchers like shorter title tags.

 4. Include the keyword naturally

Your title tag, just like any other part of your webpage, has to look natural to gain Google’s trust. You don’t want to look manipulative in Google’s eyes. Therefore, you should avoid stuffing or forcing a keyword into the title tags. Just make sure it looks natural and include the target keyword once.

5. Include numbers and brackets to improve ctr

According to XYZ, numbers in the title tag increase the click-through rate (CTR) by X%, and brackets increase it by Y%. If your page is a listicle, then you should include the number of items in the list (e.g., “8 Best Restaurants in Baku”).

You can also include the current year — not only for the sake of including a number, but also making your page appear up to date [e.g., 8 Best Restaurants in Baku (2023)].
